This is not a minor topic, and it is backed by research on the matter. Sitting can cause serious health consequences, and lead to multiple diseases and associated psychological problems.

Is it possible to be fit and still be at risk of premature death and disability from prolonged sitting?

As surprising as it may sound, the research says, yes, as Dr. James Levine, author of the book Get Up! Does: Why is your chair killing you and what you can do about it.

Sitting for a long time is bad for your health

The problems caused by sitting for a time longer than that indicated by specialists (about 6 hours approximately) can generate in the short term: loss of concentration, lack of energy, poor performance at work and other performance problems, among the negative consequences of less weight. In the following graphic you can get more information about the health problems caused by this unhealthy new age habit.

The recommendation is to start doing other tasks that involve physical activity, and if possible, reduce the time we spend sitting. See image for more information.

Cardiovascular problems

Sitting too long causes low calorie intake, metabolism and cardiovascular system run in the background. The longer you sit still, the greater the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases such as diabetes. Physical inactivity is considered a major contributor to these diseases.

Remaining seated and pressing the legs, legs crossed, can put pressure on the arteries and blood vessels. That's because we hardly use our so-called calf muscle pump while sitting.

This muscle pump supports the flow of blood in the veins of the legs. For example, it is active when walking: with each step we tense the muscles of the calves. They press on adjacent veins and pump blood from the legs to the heart.

However, anyone who sits and stays like this for a long time, lets the leg muscles rest, only activating the calf muscle. As a result, blood can pool in the legs.

Possible consequences are swelling of the legs

More than four hours of sitting quietly, like on an airplane, can lead to blood clots and thrombosis. Impaired blood circulation also plays an important role in the development of varicose veins.

Anyone who notices symptoms such as heavy or swollen legs, varicose veins, or skin changes on the legs should have them checked by their doctor. The professional can check if there is a venous insufficiency or any other cause behind it, and if a therapy is necessary.

The images below can show you more clearly what problems prolonged sitting causes and why it is harmful to your health.

For peripheral neuropathy, signs and symptoms can also include the inability to determine joint position of the extremities and/or extreme sensitivity to touch by the arms and legs. Cranial neuropathy can evolve one or more of the 12 cranial nerves; the general symptoms of neuropathy may localize mainly to the face and eyes; however, other cranial nerves may show similar symptoms. For autonomic neuropathy, because autonomic nerves control the function organs and glands, they usually produce many different symptoms and signs, depending upon what organs or glands are involved.
